Railcar
Overview
An abandoned building located in the center of West Midtown will become Atlanta’s first ruin bar. Popular throughout eastern Europe, relics of a war torn or industrial past, forgotten buildings and spaces are transformed into urban destinations to provide unpretentious spaces in which to drink, eat or dance the night away.
Railcar will be located between an Atlanta institution, The Northside Tavern, a famous dive bar that has been the destination for authentic rhythm and blues for the last 50 years and a new mixed use residential building. A remnant of West Midtown's industrial bygone era, this gritty little building shares the same proportions of intermodal rail cars that still echo in the distance as they slide past along a rail corridor located to the north of this site.
Far from a refined rail coach, this ruin will be transformed into a gritty day and night destination that will appeal to locals and transients alike. Anchored by the Northside Tavern and refined by the cocktail lounges sprouting along a new peseo that connects bar and residencies, Railcar will offer a weekly rotation of different cuisines, bar vendors and entertainment.
The original building will be preserved, reinforced where necessary to carry a new folded plate roof that floats above the building. Original graffiti, the scribbled obscenities that adorn the left over areas of the walls will remain intact. The project is an honest effort to preserve the history of a place that would otherwise be sidelined to seemingly indiscriminate demolition that is endemic to urban areas of all major cities experiencing exponential growth.
